What’s the difference between Athletic Therapy and Physio?

One of the goals of Athletic Therapy is to get you back to what you want to do as quickly and safely as possible, this is often beyond just activities of daily living but activity itself like sports, hobbies, etc. This is achieved by manual techniques, individualized exercise prescription, and excellent one-to-one care. Physiotherapy tends to be a broader spectrum of people and conditions. Athletic Therapy works best for healthy individuals who are injured and want to get back quickly.

What’s the difference between Athletic Therapy and Massage Therapy?

In the clinic, there is none in terms of what skills are available to both practicing clinicians. The approach would be different. For example, when seeing an AT, most clients dress in sport shorts and tank tops whereas in a massage one is undressed to one’s comfort and sheets are used to maintain modesty. The application of skills would be different as well since both professions are different in their approach. The benefit of RTP Therapy is that you get both professions in one clinician allowing for a greater expanse of skills and experiences to help you recover faster.

Do I need to be an athlete to see an Athletic Therapist?

No, you don’t even need to be “athletic”. If you’re injured and in pain with a focus on returning back to your activity or active lifestyle, AT can be a great solution.

I’ve had a spa massage and didn’t feel it helped. Can I expect that type of massage treatment from you?

No. Our goal is to get you back to activity as quickly as possible. Sometimes that doesn’t allow for a gentle approach. Our goal each session is to work hard so that you can feel a difference right way. Don’t get me wrong, we’re not going to “torture” you or ignore that you’re in pain however depending on the situation, often trying to elicit change can result in discomfort. How much discomfort you can tolerate will absolutely be communicated during the session. A lot of it also has to do with the timeframe we’re working with. The shorter the turn around, the more intense the sessions may need to be.

You offer 2 services, how do I know which one to book?

Our treatments tend to blend the 2 different approaches. After the initial consultation, we can determine how we will proceed. For the first appointment, book whichever works for you. If you have extended medical coverage that covers massage, book a massage treatment. If you have athletic therapy coverage or no coverage, then book an athletic therapy treatment.

Why should I book with you?

I have over a decade of experience treating clients in the Ottawa area. I am not aware of another AT/RMT in the city which allows for a unique blend skills and approaches all working towards returning you to “play”. For the full session, we will work one-to-one using manual treatments, modalities, exercise prescription, and clear communication to determine goals and expectations. My goal is to work hard to determine the best approach to return you to play.
